I've been creating furniture and other objects in wood since the 1970's. I find it to be a meditative exercise bringing this "functional art" to life, and then enjoying daily both its visual and tactile beauty. If I am to receive these materials from a tree, a living organism, then I feel I should at least do my best to create something worthy of this gift that will then live on in the tree's stead.
